The Beer Store has announced it will close its Glebe location at 900 Bank Street this summer, marking the third closure in Ottawa this year as part of a broader provincial downsizing effort.
The retailer confirmed Tuesday that nine outlets across Ontario will cease operations on July 20. Among the affected locations are stores in Ajax, Azilda, Levack, Markham, Milton, and multiple sites in Toronto, alongside the Glebe store near Holmwood Avenue.
“The Beer Store is making the difficult decision to close these locations. We will continue our focus on sustainability and recycling as we modernize operations in a changing marketplace,” said Ozzie Ahmed, vice president of retail at The Beer Store, in a prepared statement.
Ahmed acknowledged the impact of the closures on both customers and staff, stating that the company remains committed to supporting employees during the transition.
The upcoming closure in the Glebe follows a planned shutdown of the Carling Avenue location, across from Carlingwood Mall, on June 15. In February, the company also announced closures in Bells Corners and Kingston.
The wave of closures comes in the wake of policy changes by the Ontario government that expanded the sale of beer and alcohol to big box retailers, convenience stores, and gas stations. This market shift has prompted The Beer Store to reevaluate its retail footprint.
According to the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, an early implementation agreement allows The Beer Store to reduce its number of outlets to 300 by the end of 2025. Currently, the company employs approximately 6,500 workers across Ontario.
