Health Experts Warn ‘Cortisol Cocktails’ Offer Hype Over Hormonal Help

by Kaia

YORK, Pa. — A new wellness trend known as the “Cortisol Cocktail” is gaining popularity on TikTok and wellness blogs, with influencers claiming it can regulate stress hormones and promote weight loss. But health professionals caution that the drink’s benefits may be overstated—and in some cases, misleading.

The basic recipe includes half a cup of orange juice, half a cup of coconut water, and a pinch of Himalayan salt. According to Taasha Guillemette of WellSpan Health, the mixture resembles a standard electrolyte beverage more than a medical remedy.

Promoted as a morning ritual that “resets” the body and controls cortisol—the hormone associated with stress—the drink has garnered attention for its supposed ability to reduce anxiety and aid in weight loss. However, medical experts stress that these claims are largely unsubstantiated.

“You have to be very careful what you buy into,” Guillemette said. “There are some amazing things on TikTok, and there’s stuff that could be detrimental to your health. Also, please know it does not aid in weight loss. There’s not one thing in this cocktail that will boost your metabolism.”

While the drink is unlikely to cause harm for most individuals, certain components may pose risks for people with underlying health conditions. For instance, orange juice can spike blood sugar levels, making it unsuitable for individuals with diabetes. Similarly, the added salt may not be ideal for those with high blood pressure.

“The problem with these cocktails we are drinking trying to fix us is that it may mask underlying issues that can be very, very dangerous,” Guillemette warned.

Supporters of the beverage often cite “adrenal fatigue” as a condition it treats. However, the term lacks recognition within the medical community. Guillemette notes that while adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease) and Cushing’s syndrome are legitimate disorders affecting hormone production, “adrenal fatigue” is not a medically accepted diagnosis.

The perceived benefits of the cortisol cocktail, Guillemette added, may simply result from hydration after sleep and the replenishment of essential electrolytes—rather than any direct impact on cortisol levels or stress management.

“I would say it’s more of an urban legend than the cocktail is really helpful,” she said.

Experts advise that sustained stress relief and hormonal balance require proven lifestyle practices: adequate sleep, regular exercise, and balanced nutrition. As with any health trend, individuals are urged to consult a medical professional before incorporating the drink into a daily routine.
