BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA / PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – Trumer Pils, a craft beer brewed in Berkeley, California, has been named “Champion International Beer” at the 2025 Australian International Beer Awards, one of the most prestigious global competitions in the brewing industry.
The Pilsner first claimed a Gold Medal in the German-Style Pilsner category, followed by the title of Best Pilsner of the Competition. It ultimately triumphed over all non-Australian beers to receive the top international honor.
“This is our first win for Best Pilsner and Champion International Beer. It’s a tremendous accomplishment for our brewery and for Trumer Pils,” said Lars Larson, Brewmaster at Trumer Brewery. “We are extremely humbled and honored to receive these trophies.”
The Australian International Beer Awards attracted nearly 2,300 entries from 391 breweries across 21 countries this year, cementing its status as one of the largest beer competitions worldwide.
Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, beer exports are soaring even as domestic consumption continues to decline. According to the Czech Breweries and Maltsters Association, the country’s beer production in 2024 reached its highest level in 15 years, growing approximately 4.2% over the previous year.
This surge is attributed largely to increasing international demand and a significant rise in the production and popularity of non-alcoholic beer. The Drinks Business reports that exports and alcohol-free variants are now major drivers of growth for Czech breweries.
Despite being known for the highest beer consumption per capita, the Czech Republic has seen local beer drinking fall for the fourth consecutive year. Analysts cite economic pressures and a rise in draught beer taxes — which jumped from 15% to 21% — as major factors contributing to the shift.
Non-alcoholic beer has become an increasingly vital segment of the Czech market, now accounting for up to 10% of all beer sales. Production of alcohol-free brews has more than doubled since the pre-pandemic era, reflecting a broader shift in consumer preferences.
