Faklandia Brewing & Local Author Launch The Killer IPA

by Ivy

Collaborations are undoubtedly a well-respected tradition in the craft beer industry, but it’s a first for a Milwaukee-area brewery to team up with a local author to brew a book-related beer, at least locally.

St. Francis’ Faklandia Brewing, 3807 South Packard Avenue, will release The Killer IPA on Thursday, May 22, from 5 to 7 p.m., with 16-ounce cans available on-site.

Not only will the event be one of the first to celebrate its fifth anniversary at the Faklandia space, it will also feature a book signing for New Berlin author Kevin Kluesner, author of The Killer Sermon, The Killer Speech, and The Killer Condition.

The book, set in Wisconsin, centers on Milwaukee FBI agent Cole Huebsch, who has a particular crush on a local reporter and a love of craft beer, especially IPAs.

Condition of a Killer was recently selected as a book club by the Wisconsin Public Radio Book Club.

Of course, the books inspired the creation of the beer, which makes perfect sense since brewmaster and co-founder Nate Fakler calls the brewpub “the world’s first fairytale book brewery, and all of their creations are part of their own fantasy stories.”

While the past has leaned toward fantasy literature, it’s nice to throw in some regional crime fiction.

“Nate brews three small batches of IPAs, and we chose this one because it has a broader appeal than some of the super-hoppy IPAs,” Klusner said.

“It took a while for this collaboration to come to fruition. But I love what we created.”

The beer has an ABV of 5.5%.

“Using a blend of Azacca, Mandarina Bavaria and Nectaron hops, this beer is refreshing, citrusy, and has a mild hoppy finish,” Fakler said.
