Two leading Tasmanian breweries, Moo Brew and Deep South Brewing, have joined forces with international hop producer Yakima Chief Hops to release a limited-edition collaboration beer in support of the Great Southern Reef Foundation (GSRF).

The initiative, launched ahead of World Ocean Day on June 8, aims to raise funds and awareness for the protection of Australia’s Great Southern Reef — an 8,000-kilometre ecosystem under threat from climate change and human impact. The GSRF works to promote education and community engagement to safeguard the reef’s future.

The new beer, a West Coast Pilsner brewed with Yakima Chief Hops’ latest hop variety, Krush HBC 586, is described as “bright, clean and refreshingly balanced,” with tropical notes characteristic of the Krush hop. The brew is intended not only to contribute financially to reef conservation but also to highlight the vital connection between terrestrial and marine environments.

Yakima Chief Hops Regional Sales Manager for Australia, Jon Burridge, emphasized the personal connection many of the collaborators have with Tasmania’s coastal waterways. “Moo Brew and Deep South are known for their clinical ability to consistently produce exceptionally tight and tasty beers, so we are extremely honoured to have them crafting this beer,” Burridge said. “We all grew up in, on, or around the ocean. As we pass these experiences and passion on to the next generation, it’s important to understand the ecosystem and the stewardship required to ensure this amazing environment thrives.”

In line with its environmental mission, the collaboration beer prioritizes sustainability at every stage of production. It incorporates advanced hop products, in-house cultured yeast, and 100% recyclable packaging. A comprehensive carbon-reduction strategy has also been implemented to minimize the environmental footprint of the beer and its distribution.

The World Ocean Day collaboration beer is now available to venues through High Water Distribution, with an official release planned for June 8. Venues interested in stocking the beer are encouraged to make contact promptly.
