HYANNIS, Mass. — Cape Cod Beer, a cornerstone of the Cape Cod craft brewing scene for more than 20 years, has been sold to Triton Beverage Group, marking a significant transition for the Hyannis-based business. Founders Beth and Todd Marcus announced their retirement this week as they prepare to step away from the brewery they established in 2004.
The sale agreement brings Cape Cod Beer under the umbrella of Triton Beverage Group, a newly formed consortium that includes Hog Island Beer Company and Mayflower Brewing Company. The acquisition positions Triton as the largest locally owned brewing company on Cape Cod and the South Shore.
“While we weren’t actively trying to sell, this came along and I have an almost 27-year-old child working overseas and I want to be able to visit,” said Beth Marcus in a statement to the Cape Cod Times. The couple’s son Harrison is currently touring with Cirque du Soleil in Europe, and their other son, Jacob, has recently relocated to Dover, New Hampshire.
Founded in 2004, Cape Cod Beer began in borrowed brewing space and grew into a regional staple, producing over one million pints annually. The brewery now features a taproom on Phinney’s Lane and produces up to 18 varieties of beer each year. It has long served as a community hub, hosting food trucks, musical acts, and local events.
The new ownership group emphasized its commitment to maintaining Cape Cod Beer’s community-first approach. “Todd and Beth are Cape Cod legends in the beer world. Cape Cod Beer is a cornerstone of the community and a trailblazer in Massachusetts brewing. We’re honored to build on their incredible legacy,” said Mike McNamara, CEO of Triton Beverage Group and founder of Hog Island Beer Company.
As part of the sale, Cape Cod Beer has entered into a distribution agreement with The Sheehan Family Companies. For the first time in its history, the brewery’s offerings will be distributed statewide.
Despite the transition, no immediate changes are planned for the brewery’s operations. “The transition to the new owners will happen after Labor Day. We are still doing everything we had planned — Shuck!, our oysterfest, any private events booked, everything will still be held,” said Beth Marcus.
Cape Cod Beer’s origins trace back to its early days brewing for 20 restaurants, including the now-pending-sale Scargo Cafe in Dennis. The business began with a handful of beer styles produced using equipment at the former Hyport Brewing Company, before moving into its own facility.
“Beth and I are incredibly proud of what our Brew Crew has helped us create here at Cape Cod Beer,” Todd Marcus stated in a press release. “It’s incredibly important that this next chapter honors the hard work put into making this brand a success, and that the future includes a strong commitment to our community, which has been at the heart of our foundation over the last 21 years. Mike and the Triton team share our values and vision — we’re thrilled to see the brewery continue to grow in good hands.”
When asked to name a favorite among the hundreds of beers brewed over the years, Beth Marcus cited the Narrowlands New England IPA, noting, “I used to say that’s like asking me who my favorite child is. But in all truth, it is the Narrowlands New England IPA.”
