Bangkok-based beverage giant ThaiBev is bringing Thai whisky to the global stage with the launch of its new brand, Prakaan. Introduced in Asia in 2023, Prakaan is now expanding internationally through ThaiBev’s global arm, International Beverage.
The rollout begins this year in the UK, France, and Germany, with plans to enter the US and other markets in the near future.
Inspired by Heritage, Made in Kamphaeng Phet
Prakaan whisky is produced at a distillery in Kamphaeng Phet, a historic town in northern Thailand that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Prakaan” means “wall” or “fortress” in Thai, referring to the ancient walls that once surrounded the city.
The brand is launching with three expressions, each bottled at 43% ABV. Collectively known as the Tribura Series, these include Select Cask, Double Cask, and Peated Malt. The name “Tribura” symbolizes the three layers of Kamphaeng Phet’s wall, which stand for Thailand’s history, origins, and passion.
Local Climate and Craftsmanship Create Ideal Conditions
The distillery uses local spring water, combined with Thailand’s hot, humid climate, to craft whiskies with a distinct regional character. The brand also credits local craftsmanship for the quality of the spirit.
Prakaan whisky is matured in two underground warehouses that hold between 30,000 and 50,000 barrels. These cellars help control temperature and humidity during aging.
Global Debut Marks ‘A Historic Day’
Veronica Amago, Global Sales Director at International Beverage, described the launch as a significant milestone:
“This is a historic day for our company and for Thailand as we bring Thailand’s first single malt whisky to the world stage. Prakaan Distillery is the result of careful craftsmanship, precision production, and meticulous planning.”
Amago praised the whisky-making team in Kamphaeng Phet, noting that the Tribura Series is a tribute to their efforts.

ThaiBev’s Expanding Spirits Portfolio
Prakaan joins a growing range of premium spirits under ThaiBev and its subsidiary, International Beverage. The company already produces Thai rums Mekhong, SangSom, and Phraya, and is known for its local beer brand Chang.
Through its global division, ThaiBev also manages well-known Scotch whiskies like Old Pulteney and Balblair, blended Scotch Hankey Bannister, and Scottish Caorunn Gin.
In 2023, ThaiBev acquired Larsen, its first cognac brand, and New Zealand’s Cardrona Distillery. Earlier in 2025, it also acquired Asiaeuro International Beverage to strengthen its position in Asia.
Labour Strike at Scottish Facilities
Despite the global expansion, International Beverage is currently facing labour tensions. Workers at the company’s Scottish factories are planning a six-day strike beginning June 2, following a dispute over pay.
