Pia Poynton Leads the Charge for Inclusion and Innovation in Australia’s Beer Industry

by Kaia

In an industry historically dominated by men, women and non-binary leaders are reshaping the landscape of brewing, challenging long-standing norms and forging a path toward a more inclusive future. Their vision and leadership continue to redefine the culture of beer from production to community engagement.

Among these trailblazers is Pia Poynton, whose journey from bartender to industry advocate highlights the power of passion and persistence. Currently the Sales and Operations Manager at Grain and Grape and a certified Cicerone, Poynton has become a prominent voice for diversity in the Australian beer scene.

Her introduction to beer came during an early job at Perth’s Belgian Beer Café Westende, where she was struck by the depth of history and flavour within the craft. “I was super green and hadn’t really bartended before,” she recalled. “I certainly wasn’t expecting to discover the world of beer was filled with so much history and could taste so different to what I had known beer to be.”

The experience sparked a lifelong fascination. Poynton’s career gained momentum at Gage Roads as a sales representative. It was there that she realised beer could be more than a passion—it could be a career. “Happy days,” she said of that realisation.

Yet, Poynton’s professional ascent hasn’t been without its challenges. As an outspoken advocate for gender equity, she points to the visible lack of diversity as a key issue. “It’s hard to attract anyone other than men into an industry that looks like it’s definitely all men,” she said. Representation, she argues, is crucial: “If we can’t see people like us being involved, it’s a pretty big leap to see ourselves in that space.”

Poynton urges breweries to rethink their practices—starting with hiring policies, HR engagement, and staff training. Inclusive job postings, thoughtful internal communication, and respectful branding are essential, she asserts. “Beer names or designs that don’t demean women is the absolute bare minimum here.”

Meaningful change, she believes, doesn’t come from sweeping gestures. “Change will happen from everyone making small decisions every day in how we show up and represent beer in the world.”

Safety, respect, and recognition remain fundamental concerns for women and non-binary individuals in the industry. “The challenges are to simply feel safe, to be heard and to be respected,” she said. While Poynton acknowledges some progress, she emphasizes that the journey is far from complete. “I have yet to meet a woman in this industry who this wouldn’t resonate with.”

Supportive workplaces have played a critical role in her continued presence in the industry. “Without either [safety or inclusivity], I am not sure I’d still be in the industry,” she noted.

Poynton also advocates for self-care and connection. To those considering a path in beer, she advises: “Find your people and trust your instincts, and make sure you make looking after yourself a priority.”

Over the years, Poynton has celebrated several professional milestones. Hosting the 2019 Pink Boots WA brew day at Nowhereman Brewing remains a highlight, as does receiving the WA Brewers Association Industry Recognition Award in 2022. She also played a key role in launching the Pink Boots judging training program with fellow advocate Clare Clouting.

What drives Poynton most is her love of people and their stories. Whether working with brewers or winemakers, it’s the connection with individuals and communities that fuels her passion. “It’s what made hospitality so rewarding, and it’s the same with beer and wine,” she said.

Pia Poynton’s story is a testament to the transformative power of inclusive leadership in the beer industry. Her career stands as a model for how care, community, and courage can shape a more dynamic and equitable future for brewing in Australia.
