BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority began its meeting on Wednesday, May 28, by honoring the life and legacy of Oscar Wong, founder of Highland Brewing Company and a key figure in Asheville’s emergence as a national craft beer destination.
Wong, widely regarded as a pioneer of the local brewing scene, passed away on Sunday, May 25. His influence was felt deeply among board members, many of whom operate hotels and knew Wong personally through his longstanding contributions to the community.
Wong established Highland Brewing Company in 1994, igniting what would become a thriving craft beer movement in Asheville. His efforts helped earn the city the moniker “Beer City, USA,” a title that reflects both the volume and quality of its breweries.
“Oscar Wong is a really important part of our community,” said Vic Isley, CEO of Explore Asheville. “Leah Wong [Ashburn], his daughter, served on the Tourism Development Authority board, and Oscar was the godfather of craft brew. He truly left a lasting mark on this community and, more importantly, was an amazing person.”
During the meeting, a tribute slide was presented, commemorating Wong’s love for Asheville and his enduring impact on the region.
Wong’s contributions extended beyond brewing. In 2011, he received the William A.V. Cecil Tourism Leadership Award for his efforts in boosting local tourism. In 2023, he was presented with one of North Carolina’s highest civilian honors—the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Additionally, the city of Asheville and Buncombe County officially designated May 16 as Oscar Wong Day, recognizing his legacy and civic contributions.
A file image shared by Highland Brewing Company shows Wong alongside his daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, who currently serves as the brewery’s CEO.
Oscar Wong’s visionary leadership helped shape not only an industry but a cultural identity for Asheville. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire the region he helped define.
