by Kaia

Constantia, South Africa — Steenberg Vineyards is reinforcing its reputation as a leader in Sauvignon Blanc with a new vintage release, high-profile accolades, and a series of gastronomic events that highlight the versatility and elegance of this celebrated varietal.

At the forefront of this achievement is Elunda Basson, Steenberg’s Cellarmaster and Chief Operating Officer, who was recently appointed Chairperson of the South African Sauvignon Blanc Association. Basson’s expertise and intuitive approach to winemaking have been pivotal in shaping the estate’s nuanced expressions of Sauvignon Blanc.

Three distinct styles define the estate’s offering: the mineral-driven Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, the textural and layered Barrel Fermented style, and the flagship Black Swan, which recently earned 93 points at the London Wine Competition. Each wine reflects a deep understanding of the Constantia terroir and a precise response to the characteristics of individual vineyard blocks.

2024 Vintage Offers Depth and Precision

The newly released 2024 Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc is a testament to the estate’s dedication to quality and terroir-driven winemaking. Comprising grapes harvested at different stages of ripeness from select vineyard sites, the wine presents a pale straw colour with a green tint. Aromas of Cape gooseberry, lemon zest, quince, and white peach lead to a bright, mineral-laced palate, marked by fresh acidity and an extended, elegant finish.

Vinification techniques such as cool morning harvesting, gentle skin maceration, and extended lees contact have added depth and age-worthiness to the wine, suggesting optimal cellaring potential of two to five years. Wine Club Members can enjoy the 2024 vintage at a preferential rate throughout May.

Culinary Celebrations of Sauvignon Blanc

To mark International Sauvignon Blanc Day, Steenberg is hosting a series of exclusive dining experiences across its acclaimed restaurants, Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82.

At Tryn, guests are invited to explore a four-course pairing menu designed to showcase the estate’s Sauvignon Blanc range. Dishes such as masala-dusted calamari with yuzu emulsion, deconstructed steak tartare, and veal escalope with artichoke velouté are paired with Classic, Barrel Fermented, Black Swan, and Sparkling styles. The experience is available daily until 31 May 2025, priced at R895 per person.

Meanwhile, Bistro Sixteen82 offers a bold menu-for-two featuring five flavour-driven courses including wasabi-dusted Patagonian baby calamari and crispy baked brie with grape gel. Each dish is paired with a bottle of the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc. This culinary journey runs until 31 May 2025, at R890 for two guests.

Celebrating Terroir with De Grendel

In a special collaborative event, Steenberg will partner with De Grendel Wines for a Winemaker’s Dinner celebrating terroir. Taking place on Thursday, 19 June 2025 at Bistro Sixteen82, the evening will feature a curated food and wine pairing experience guided by the winemakers from both estates. The event begins at 18:30 and is priced at R950 per person. Seating is limited.

Through a combination of innovative winemaking and curated gastronomic events, Steenberg continues to elevate the profile of South African Sauvignon Blanc on the global stage.
