A dry white Muscat wine produced in Alicante has captured international attention after being awarded 93 points by Wine Enthusiast, a leading American wine publication. The accolade places the wine among the most notable globally, with the magazine lauding it as “exceptional.”
Featured in Wine Enthusiast’s curated selection of sweet Muscat wines, the Alicante offering stood out for its unique profile, described as both “sumptuous and dry.” The wine, named Pureza and produced by Pepe Mendoza, is crafted exclusively from Muscat of Alexandria grapes. These grapes are cultivated on the Pla de Llíber estate, situated within the Alicante Designation of Origin.
The winemaking process follows traditional methods that emphasize purity and regional character. After the harvest, the grapes undergo a 60-day fermentation period in clay amphorae—ceramic jars with capacities ranging from 220 to 300 litres. This process concludes before the end of summer and, according to the winery, allows the wine to embody “all the purity of the Mediterranean.”
Following fermentation, Pureza is aged in the same amphorae for six months, then matures for an additional five months in the bottle before release. The wine’s production method and terroir-driven profile have contributed to its critical acclaim, affirming Alicante’s growing prominence in the global wine landscape.
