Tokyo, May 14 (Jiji Press) — Sales of beer and quasi-beer products by Japan’s four leading brewers plunged 36 percent in April compared to the same month last year, according to data released by Kirin Brewery Co. and other companies.
The steep decline follows a significant surge in consumer demand in March, as buyers rushed to stock up ahead of price hikes implemented in April.
By volume, Suntory Spirits Ltd. reported a 36 percent drop in sales, while Sapporo Breweries Ltd. saw a 31 percent decrease. In terms of sales value, Asahi Breweries Ltd. experienced a 33 percent fall, and Kirin’s sales declined by 31 percent.
A spokesperson from one of the brewers noted that the lingering effects of the pre-hike purchasing rush are expected to continue influencing sales figures through May.
