Spain’s arid Almería province has earned international recognition after a locally-produced rosé wine was named among the world’s finest at the prestigious Brussels World Wine Competition 2025. The Antas Rosado, crafted by Bodega Sierra Almagrera, received an impressive 86.6-point rating from the competition’s distinguished international panel, which includes master sommeliers, wine journalists, and industry experts.
Now in its 30th year, the Brussels competition rigorously evaluates thousands of wines through blind tastings, underscoring the significance of this achievement for Almería—a region traditionally overlooked in Spain’s wine landscape.
Judges commended the rosé for its remarkable complexity, citing its intense aromatic profile and sophisticated palate. The wine’s unique character is attributed to Garnacha Rosada grapes grown in Almería’s distinctive desert terroir, where extreme climate conditions and arid soils contribute to extraordinary concentration and flavor intensity.
The Antas Rosado’s elegant bottle design honors the ancient Argaric queens who ruled the area more than 4,000 years ago. The crown emblem on the label draws inspiration from archaeological findings in elite female burials at El Argar, symbolizing the enduring feminine strength of the region.
This recognition marks a pivotal moment for Almería’s wine industry, which has long been overshadowed by Spain’s established wine regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The accolade validates innovative winemaking practices tailored to desert conditions and demonstrates that Spain’s most unlikely wine territory can produce world-class vintages.
The success further highlights growing global interest in Spain’s diverse wine offerings beyond its traditional strongholds.
