Belgium Sees Continued Decline in Beer Consumption Amid Shifting Habits and Economic Pressures

by Kaia

Belgium, long celebrated for its rich brewing heritage with over 400 breweries and more than 1,600 types of beer, is witnessing a steady decline in domestic beer consumption.

According to the latest annual report from the Belgian Brewers association, beer consumption in the country fell by 2.1% in 2024. While less severe than the 6% drop recorded in 2023, the decrease reflects a broader, decade-long trend—Belgian beer consumption has declined nearly 20% over the past ten years.

The report attributes the downturn to a combination of economic and social factors, including sustained pressure on consumer purchasing power, high operational costs, reduced competitiveness, and geopolitical instability. Additionally, changing drinking habits and heightened health awareness are influencing consumer choices.

“Belgians are drinking less alcohol overall, and so, less beer,” the association stated.

The decline is not unique to Belgium. Across the European Union, brewers are facing a similar shift, with demand for alcoholic beer steadily waning. A Eurostat report confirms that the EU is experiencing a widespread reduction in traditional beer consumption.

In contrast, non-alcoholic alternatives are gaining traction. The growing popularity of low- and zero-alcohol options is reshaping the market. “Five years ago, there was just one non-alcoholic beer, now there are six,” said Waldo Marlier, a local bar owner, reflecting the expanding range of such offerings in bars and shops.

Despite Belgium’s strong brewing reputation, the industry is increasingly having to adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic challenges.
