The Beer Store has announced the closure of multiple retail locations across Ontario, including outlets in southern Simcoe County and York Region, as part of an ongoing effort to modernize its operations in line with provincial retail alcohol reforms.
Among the impacted sites, the Aurora location at 14800 Yonge Street is scheduled to close on July 6, followed by the Tottenham store at 55 Queen Street, which will cease operations on August 10. These closures are part of a broader reduction, with nine additional outlets across the province also slated to shut down.
“This was a difficult decision,” said Ozzie Ahmed, Vice President of Retail at The Beer Store. “We remain focused on what we do best—offering ice-cold beer, excellent customer service, and operating a world-class recycling program that returned more containers last year than we sold.”
The closures are aligned with updates to the Early Implementation Agreement and provincial guidelines surrounding retail alcohol sales. These changes are designed to modernize the consumer alcohol marketplace, a transition The Beer Store acknowledges will be challenging for both customers and staff.
“We understand the impact this will have on our communities and are committed to treating our employees with respect and supporting them through this process,” Ahmed added.
Despite the closures, The Beer Store emphasized the continued importance of its recycling program. Customers are still encouraged to return all eligible alcohol containers—including beer, wine, and spirits bottles; aluminum cans; plastic bottles; tetra packs; and kegs—to reclaim their deposits. The program currently processes approximately 1.6 billion containers annually.
The company has not yet disclosed whether additional closures are planned.
