ATASCADERO, Calif. — The beloved pedal boat rentals at Atascadero Lake will return this summer under new management, as Wild Fields Brewhouse prepares to officially open its second location at the lakeside boathouse on June 14. The site will now offer locally brewed beer to-go, in addition to boat rentals and concessions.
The Atascadero-based brewery soft-launched its new venture over Memorial Day weekend, operating with a temporary permit secured in partnership with the Charles Paddock Zoo. The weekend event featured boat rentals and craft beer sales, with proceeds partially benefiting the zoo.
The new venture, branded as Wild Fields Lakeside, will serve 16-ounce cans of the brewhouse’s craft beer, available to adult patrons for consumption onshore or while boating. This offering is made possible by Atascadero’s open container laws, which allow public alcohol consumption in designated areas.
Wild Fields Brewhouse, co-owned by Ryan and Jacque Fields, is expanding from its main facility in Colony Square. The couple aims to create a family-friendly atmosphere that mirrors the original location’s inclusive appeal. “We’re just going to try to put our Wild Fields flair on it and really continue to be a big part of the community,” said co-owner Ryan Fields.
The new location will continue the traditional boathouse operations, offering pedal boat rentals and concessions alongside its craft beer. The fleet includes ten pedal boats—ranging from two- to four-seaters—and three aqua cycles, with hourly rental rates between $25 and $35. Beer prices will range from $5 to $7 per can.
The brewery plans to rotate its canned beer offerings throughout the summer, including selections such as the Atascadero Beach Mexican Lager, various pale ales, West Coast IPAs, brown ales, and oatmeal stouts. Although no cocktails or full bar services will be provided, snacks and fishing bait will be available for purchase.
Wild Fields Lakeside’s grand opening is scheduled for June 14. The venue will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer. Reduced hours are expected after Labor Day, with the potential for continued seasonal operations into the fall and winter.
The brewhouse’s debut aligns with Atascadero’s “Saturday in the Park” concert series, which runs from June 28 through August 30. Wild Fields aims to participate in community events and collaborate with local institutions, including the nearby zoo, to enrich the lakeside experience for both residents and visitors.
The transition in management follows the amicable departure of previous operator Mr. Putters, which is refocusing on its downtown attractions—Mr. Putters Putt Putt and Andy’s Awesome Arcade—according to city spokesperson Terrie Banish.
