George Wendt, Iconic ‘Cheers’ Star, Dies at 76
George Wendt, renowned for his portrayal of the endearing barfly Norm Peterson on the classic sitcom Cheers, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 20, 2025, at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news, with a representative stating, “George was a doting family man, a well – loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”
Wendt’s tenure on Cheers spanned the show’s entire 11 – season run from 1982 to 1993. In the series, set in a Boston bar, Norm was the most beloved regular. His every entrance was greeted with a resounding “Norm!” from fellow bar patrons, a moment that became one of the show’s most iconic running gags. For his outstanding performance, Wendt received six consecutive nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, though he never took home the statue.
Born in Chicago in 1948, Wendt began his comedic journey at the famous Second City. His career extended far beyond Cheers. He had memorable roles in films such as Fletch, Gung Ho, and House. He also made multiple appearances on Saturday Night Live as the Chicago sports superfan Bob Swerski, leading his friends in chants of “Da Bears!” and “Da Bulls!”. Additionally, he lent his voice to an animated character on The Simpsons and had guest spots on other shows like Seinfeld, Family Guy, and Frasier.In the 1990s, after Cheers ended, Wendt starred in his own short – lived sitcom, The George Wendt Show, but it was canceled after only a few episodes. He also had a role in the final episodes of the TV series Columbo in 1995.
Wendt’s health had been a concern in recent years. In 2012, he was hospitalized in Chicago due to chest pains. Tests revealed a severely constricted artery, and he underwent coronary bypass surgery. In the years following, he faced mobility issues related to weight gain. In late 2024, he appeared frail and was using a wheelchair during a public appearance, and by early 2025, he was relying on a cane.Tributes poured in from his co – stars and fans. Ted Danson, who played bar owner Sam Malone on Cheers, expressed his deep sorrow, calling Wendt a cherished friend. John Ratzenberger described him as a “true craftsman” and a close confidant. Rhea Perlman, who played waitress Carla Tortelli, praised Wendt’s kindness.
The final episode of Cheers, titled “One for the Road,” aired on May 20, 1993, and was watched by an estimated 93 million people, making it one of the most – watched broadcasts in US history outside of the Super Bowl. Coincidentally, Wendt passed away exactly 32 years after the show’s finale.Wendt leaves behind a rich legacy in the world of television and entertainment.
