Belgium’s two leading viticultural associations have joined forces to launch the “BelBul” label, a landmark initiative aimed at professionalizing the nation’s wine industry and boosting its reputation as a producer of premium sparkling wines.
The joint effort by Belgische Wijnbouwers – Vlaanderen and the Association des Vignerons Belges – Wallonie marks a significant step forward in affirming Belgium’s growing status in the global sparkling wine market. The BelBul label guarantees sparkling wines that are 100% Belgian, made using the traditional method, and meet strict standards of quality and origin.
To qualify for the BelBul designation, sparkling wines must adhere to the following criteria:
- Entirely produced within Belgian territory using grapes cultivated in Belgium
- Crafted using the traditional method (méthode traditionnelle)
- Recognized with an official appellation of origin (BOB/AOP)
- Produced by members of either of the two professional associations and within the framework of a cooperative structure
Belgium’s wine sector has experienced rapid growth in both volume and quality over recent years. Today, more than 100 Belgian wine estates produce sparkling wines, most of which utilize the traditional method. This technique yields wines known for their fine bubbles, fresh acidity, and refined aromatic profiles.
Belgium’s favorable soil composition and cool climate provide ideal conditions for the production of elegant sparkling wines. Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape, followed by Pinot Noir and Johanniter. Meanwhile, disease-resistant and climate-resilient grape varieties such as Solaris and Souvignier Gris are gaining traction due to their reduced need for crop protection.
The introduction of the BelBul label is expected to further strengthen the identity of Belgian sparkling wines and support the sector’s economic development. Beyond elevating quality standards, the initiative contributes to job creation in agriculture and tourism while encouraging exports of Belgian wine.
The Association des Vignerons Belges – Wallonie (AVW), which represents 102 winemakers—two-thirds of Wallonia’s total—continues to play a vital role in advancing regional viticulture. Its initiatives are focused on quality enhancement, recognition, and professional development for its members.
Founded in 2009, the ASBL Belgische Wijnbouwers – Vlaanderen now represents over 85% of professional winemakers in Flanders. The organization engages in active dialogue with government bodies, research institutes, and industry partners while supporting its members through education, advisory services, and promotional activities both within Belgium and internationally.
With BelBul, Belgium consolidates its efforts to gain recognition on the world stage for its high-quality sparkling wines, further anchoring the country’s place among Europe’s emerging wine producers.
