Belgian winegrowers have launched a new quality certification for sparkling wines made entirely within the country, named BelBul. This label ensures that every bottle is 100% Belgian, crafted using the traditional method of sparkling wine production.
The initiative, spearheaded by Belgian Winegrowers – Flanders and the Association des Vignerons Belges – Wallonie, represents the majority of the country’s wine producers. The aim is to enhance and promote Belgium’s expanding wine sector, with a focus on sparkling wines, predominantly produced in the Hainaut province.
To earn the BelBul label, producers must adhere to stringent requirements. These include using locally grown grapes, ensuring the entire production process takes place in Belgium—from vine cultivation to bottle—and following the traditional bottle fermentation method. Additionally, producers must be affiliated with one of the two founding associations and operate under a recognized designation of origin.
The launch of BelBul comes at a time of increasing international recognition for Belgian wines. Last week, the esteemed French wine magazine La Revue du vin de France featured Belgian wine on its cover for the first time. The article, titled “Belgium, the Birth of a Wine Country,” dedicated eight pages to Belgian wines, highlighting 44 bottles. Among them was La Falize, a Chardonnay from the Namur region, which was singled out as the best of the selection.
