by Kaia

Legendary Australian wine critic and author James Halliday AM is parting with the final bottles of his renowned wine collection through an exclusive online auction hosted by fine wine platform LANGTONS. The auction offers collectors and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to acquire rare and highly sought-after wines, many of which were personally selected and curated by Halliday himself.

The upcoming auction will feature 100 lots from Halliday’s personal collection, with a particular emphasis on Domaine Armand Rousseau, a French producer regarded as one of the finest in the world. Each bottle will bear Halliday’s personal signature, adding further prestige to the rare offerings. Notable items in the auction include the 1999 Clos des Ruchottes Monopole, Ruchottes-Chambertin, the 1976 Clos de la Roche, and the 1990 Grand Cru, Chambertin, all of which are expected to attract significant attention from wine aficionados.

In reflecting on the auction, Halliday shared his admiration for the Domaine Rousseau wines. “Having long since sold the last of my DRCs [Domaine de la Romanee-Conti], my Rousseaus are the best wines in my cellar, led – of course – by the Chambertins from top vintages,” Halliday explained. He further added that the Clos de Beze is also a notable favorite, often offering exceptional value for money. “Rousseau now fills the shoes left by the impossible-to-find DRCs,” he concluded.

This marks the second time Halliday has entrusted LANGTONS with the sale of his wine collection, following a successful 2020 auction. During that event, Halliday’s cellar – which included the largest single collection of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti wines ever seen in the Australian market – was sold to eager buyers. This current auction will be the final sale of Halliday’s personal wine collection, as he prepares to relocate from the Yarra Valley’s Coldstream Hills to Sydney.

In addition to the Domaine Rousseau bottles, the auction also includes other exceptional wines. Highlights include a 1996 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois Billecart Brut, a 1997 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling-Spatlese, and a 1980 Domaine Clape. Domestic offerings feature a House of Arras E.J. Carr Late Disgorged Methode Traditionelle 2000 Magnum from Tasmania, a 1997 Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir from the Macedon Ranges, and a 1992 Charles Melton Nine Popes Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre from the Barossa Valley.

The James Halliday Private Collection online auction is currently live on the LANGTONS website and will close at 9:00 PM AEST on Sunday, May 25.
