U.S. Beer Shipments Show Modest Recovery in March 2025, But Industry Faces Ongoing Decline

by Kaia

U.S. brewers shipped 12.5 million barrels of beer in March 2025, marking a 0.7% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to an unofficial estimate released by the Beer Institute. Despite the modest uptick, the industry’s performance remains far below pre-2024 levels. March 2024 shipments had already declined significantly by 15.8% from the previous year, falling from 14.75 million barrels in March 2023 to 12.4 million barrels.

The March 2025 increase represents the first year-over-year gain in beer shipments after three consecutive months of decline. However, this gain does not indicate a complete recovery, as the industry continues to grapple with challenges in the face of fluctuating demand and market pressures.

First Quarter 2025 Performance Continues to Lag Behind

The first quarter of 2025 painted a challenging picture for the beer industry. Shipments in January 2025 totaled 10.55 million barrels, down 8.7% from January 2024. February saw an even steeper drop, with shipments falling 14.9% year-over-year to 10.3 million barrels. Overall, U.S. brewers shipped 33.35 million barrels in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 7.3% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.

Understanding Taxable Removals

Taxable removals, the metric used by the Beer Institute to track beer shipments, refers to the volume of beer shipped from breweries and subject to federal excise tax. It provides an accurate snapshot of domestic beer movement and serves as a key indicator of industry performance.

Ongoing Market Pressures

The beer industry continues to face significant challenges, particularly for craft brewers. Stagnant production volumes and shifting distribution networks due to industry consolidation are weighing heavily on smaller breweries. While the slight uptick in March offers a potential sign of stability, overall volumes remain well below recent historical trends.

Craft brewers, in particular, will need to closely monitor these monthly figures to assess how market conditions are evolving and to gauge consumer demand as they navigate a shifting landscape.
