The Beer Store has announced plans to shutter ten additional locations across Ontario, including a store in Cambridge, as part of its broader strategy to adapt to a shifting retail landscape.
The closures, scheduled to take effect on August 10, will impact stores in the following communities:
- Cambridge – 130 Cedar St.
- Mississauga – 2925 Eglinton Ave. W., 3154 Hurontario St., and 65 Queen St. N.
- Oakville – 1431 Rebecca St.
- Scarborough – 2934 Finch Ave. E.
- Tottenham – 55 Queen St.
- Vaughan – 1470 Major Mackenzie Dr.
- Amherstview – 4501 Bath Rd.
- Iroquois Falls – 227 Cambridge Ave.
In a statement, The Beer Store said the decision was driven by the need to modernize operations and respond to changing consumer preferences.
“The Beer Store is modernizing operations to meet the needs of [the] marketplace – this means making the difficult decision to close some stores,” the company said. “We know this will be disappointing to many customers and our valued employees. We don’t make this decision lightly; it is part of our ongoing commitment to business sustainability and serving the needs of our customers.”
This latest round of closures adds to a growing list of store shutdowns across the province. Since the beginning of the year, more than a dozen outlets have ceased operations, including locations at 400 King St. West in Kitchener and 140 Main St. in Erin.
Industry analysts suggest the move is partly influenced by Ontario’s evolving alcohol retail policies. Recent changes have expanded the availability of beer, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages to convenience and grocery stores, increasing competition in the marketplace and prompting legacy retailers to reassess their business models.
