GQEBERHA – Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) reaffirmed its standing in Africa’s craft beer scene by clinching five medals at the 2024 African Beer Cup, one of the continent’s premier brewing competitions.
The prestigious event, held from May 17 to 20, brought together 260 beer entries from 14 African nations. Judging was conducted under the Beer Judge Certification Programme (BJCP) guidelines by a panel of 58 certified experts from around the world. Each entry was assessed by two separate panels, with discrepancies greater than seven points triggering a third evaluation to ensure fairness and accuracy.
Building on its previous success—including the title of Best Beer in Africa in 2023—RHBC delivered another commanding performance. The Gqeberha-based brewery earned two gold medals, two silver, and one bronze.
The brewery’s Fever Dream Black IPA and Forbidden Milkshake IPA captured gold in their respective categories, highlighting the company’s flair for bold and innovative brewing. Silver medals were awarded to the Twin Fin Keller Pilsner and Two Moods Raspberry Saison, while the Coastal Cult Hazy Pale Ale claimed bronze.
“All the beers we entered won awards, which is a fantastic outcome,” said RHBC master brewer Niall Cook. He extended gratitude to the African Beer Cup organizers and acknowledged the contributions of collaborators, including the Yeastern Cape Brewing Club—partners on the award-winning Forbidden Milkshake IPA—and Hazeldean Brewing Co of Tyger Valley, who co-developed the Two Moods Raspberry Saison.
RHBC’s award-winning craft beers are available at the brewery’s taproom in Baakens Valley, off Alabaster Street, and can also be purchased via its official website.
