Laphroaig Unveils 38yo For £4,100

by Ivy

Laphroaig has introduced a 38-year-old single malt as the second release in its Archive Collection. This follows the inaugural 36-year-old expression launched in November 2023. The series honors Laphroaig’s heritage and the pioneers who shaped its story.

Whisky Distilled During a Challenging Era

The new release was distilled in 1985, amid one of the toughest decades for Scotch whisky. Many distilleries closed or were mothballed during this period. Laphroaig itself slowed production as it prepared for major renovations. These works included building a new still house that brought Laphroaig’s stills and condensers indoors for the first time.

A Glimpse into Laphroaig’s Past

Daryl Haldane, private client director at Laphroaig (owned by Suntory Global Spirits), said the Archive Collection lets whisky lovers “immerse themselves in a significant moment” of the distillery’s history. He described the 1980s spirit as a “genuine throwback” that reveals a rich story from the past. Haldane added that the rarity of the 38-year-old “stands as a true testament to the conviction and dedication” that define Laphroaig.
