In a bold tribute to Michigan agriculture, Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers has unveiled a limited-edition gin made with fresh, locally grown asparagus. The new spirit, aptly named Asparagin, is part of the distillery’s ongoing mission to celebrate local ingredients in unexpected and creative ways.
A Unique Michigan Collaboration
Crafted in partnership with the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Committee, Asparagin is distilled on-site using red winter wheat, hand-foraged juniper berries from Beaver Island, and an unconventional botanical lineup that includes fresh asparagus from Mills Family Farm. Other botanicals include dill, tarragon, chives, capers, and lemon peel, creating a savory and herbaceous flavor profile.
“Asparagus is one of Michigan’s most iconic spring crops,” said Kyle VanStrien, co-founder and co-owner of Long Road Distillers. “We’re proud that Michigan is the leading asparagus producer in the country, growing nearly half of all U.S. asparagus.”
Tasting Notes and ABV
At 41% ABV, Asparagin offers a bold yet balanced experience aimed at curious drinkers and cocktail enthusiasts looking for something out of the ordinary. The spirit’s savory character makes it ideal for experimental cocktails and culinary pairings.
Limited Release, Local Roots
Asparagin is available in limited quantities starting the first week of June at all Long Road tasting rooms. It will also be distributed across Michigan through Imperial Beverage Company and found at select bars and retailers statewide.
The label proudly features both “Pure Michigan” and “Michigan Asparagus”, reinforcing its local agricultural roots.
A Legacy of Innovation
Long Road Distillers has earned a reputation for crafting spirits that reflect Michigan’s diverse agriculture and farming communities. Asparagin continues that legacy by transforming a humble vegetable into an artisanal, small-batch spirit.
Notably, Long Road isn’t the first to experiment with asparagus in distillation—Portobello Road Distillery in the UK launched an asparagus vodka in 2022. Still, Asparagin stands out as a distinctly Michigan-made gin, both in taste and spirit.
“We’re always looking for unexpected ways to celebrate local agriculture,” VanStrien added. “Asparagin is one of our boldest, most unique Michigan spirits yet—a little wild, a little weird, and surprisingly delicious.”
