CHISINAU, Moldova — Moldova is set to host the 46th World Congress of Grapes and Wine from June 16 to 20, marking the first time the country will hold the prestigious international event. Organized by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the congress will convene at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau, bringing together experts, researchers, grape growers, winemakers, producers, and policymakers from 51 OIV member states and beyond.
Held under the theme “Shaping the Future of Wine: Embracing Resilience, Enhancing Value, Fostering Innovation”, the congress will serve as a platform for addressing key challenges and opportunities in viticulture and enology, with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and value creation. The scientific program will feature over 300 presentations, selected from nearly 300 submitted papers representing 32 countries. Abstracts will be made available during the event.
Key Discussion Tracks
The congress is structured into four major thematic groups: Viticulture, Enology, Economics and Law, and Safety and Health.
The Viticulture session will explore sustainable ecosystem practices, emphasizing grapevine adaptation to climate change, biodiversity preservation, genetic innovations, precision agriculture, and the economic potential of table grape production. Presentations will offer actionable insights into maintaining vineyard productivity while safeguarding environmental resources.
The Enology panel will highlight cutting-edge technologies for sustainable winemaking. Topics include yeast derivatives to enhance fermentation, partial dealcoholization processes, the role of artificial intelligence in wine analysis, sulfite-free production methods, alternative preservation strategies, and byproduct valorization techniques aimed at boosting efficiency and sustainability.
The Economics and Legal group will focus on strategies for building resilient business models and value chains. Discussions will cover certification impacts on winery performance, Moldova’s sustainable development path in the wine sector, digital marketing advances, international trade dynamics, sustainable regulatory frameworks, wine tourism, and comparative legal harmonization. The influence of social media on wine sales, particularly in emerging markets, will also be examined.
In the Safety and Health track, international researchers will present findings on moderate wine consumption and its health implications, development of grape-based functional foods, contaminant risk assessments, consumer protection frameworks, and initiatives aimed at promoting transparency and public well-being.
Side Events and Activities
Alongside the core scientific program from June 16 to 18, participants will have the opportunity to join 13 technical tours to prominent Moldovan wineries, offering firsthand insights into local production practices. Social events will include a gala dinner at the renowned Cricova Winery, famous for its expansive underground cellars and extensive wine collection.
The congress will culminate with the 23rd General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, also to be held at the Palace of the Republic.
