EDMONTON — The Alberta government has withdrawn a proposed fee schedule for breweries that would have significantly increased taxes for some producers, including the province’s oldest beer maker.
The new schedule, introduced in February following the release of the provincial budget, aimed to lower the production threshold at which breweries would be subject to the highest government fee. It also sought to revise both the production limits and the incremental fee structure leading up to the top tier.
The changes would have disproportionately affected established brewers by accelerating their progression into higher tax brackets, sparking concern across the industry. The government has now scrapped the proposal amid mounting pressure and criticism from stakeholders.
