Global wine consumption continues to experience a sustained decline, influenced by a combination of economic pressures, health awareness, and evolving drinking habits.
The latest findings from the International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR) 2024 report, What’s Driving Wine’s Structural Decline, reveal that per capita wine consumption in the United Kingdom reached its peak in 2009 and has steadily decreased since then.
Although there was a brief resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic, overall consumption has dropped significantly over the past two decades.
Specifically, the report highlights that on a per-adult basis, UK wine consumption has fallen by approximately 14% compared to levels recorded in 2000.
This downward trend reflects broader shifts in consumer preferences, including a growing emphasis on moderate drinking and changing consumption occasions, which have particularly affected sparkling wines such as Champagne.
