by Ivy

Over the years, it has collaborated with artists from Canada to China and even captured the spirit of global cities like New York and London through its Distill Your World range.

But for its latest limited-edition single malt releases, the 200-year-old distillery has looked closer to home, drawing inspiration from a true Scottish artistic legend: Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This collaboration with the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society honors the early 20th-century architect, designer, and painter, whose distinctive style continues to influence art and design worldwide.

Celebrating a Scottish Icon: Mackintosh’s Art and Influence

Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work bridges the worlds of high art and functional design. From his striking stained glass panels to practical yet ornamental pieces like his famous high-back chairs, Mackintosh combined beauty with purpose. It’s this duality that The Macallan sought to capture in its new Tree of Life Collection, which features two separate bottlings celebrating different facets of his legacy.

Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Distiller at The Macallan, explained the inspiration behind the project:
“This collaboration has been a rich source of creative inspiration. With two special edition whiskies, we have been able to explore the world of Charles Rennie Mackintosh even further.”

Campbell added, “We have used our entire stock to select casks that have reached their optimum state of maturation to bring to life elements of the Mackintosh legend. This journey has been a thoughtful and intricate process, exploring Mackintosh’s work, his life story, and his enduring influence, pairing these stories with whiskies that naturally echo his spirit.”

The Tree of Life: A Rare and Artistic Masterpiece

The Tree of Life bottling takes its name and design cues from one of Mackintosh’s most famous motifs — the Mackintosh Rose. This emblem appears throughout his work, most notably in his 1902 stained glass panel, The Soul of the Rose. The packaging for this whisky, including the decanter and accompanying sculpture, is a visual homage to that legacy.

The whisky itself is exceptionally rare: crafted from two European sherry oak casks laid down in 1979, now aged 46 years. This milestone age holds special resonance; Mackintosh himself retired from architecture at 46 to focus on watercolors and floral studies in the English countryside.

Despite The Macallan not producing peated whisky since shortly after World War II, the Tree of Life boasts tasting notes that highlight “smoky peat leading to layers of tropical fruits and dark chocolate-covered raisins,” finished with “aromatic smoky finishes.” The whisky is bottled at 46.2% ABV and presented in a stunning crystal Lalique decanter, topped with a Mackintosh-inspired crystal rose. The decanter is nestled in a metal sculpture that echoes the metalwork style seen in Mackintosh’s architectural designs.

Only 112 bottles of Tree of Life will be released worldwide, making it one of the rarest and most collectible Macallans ever created. Pricing is available upon request through Macallan Customer Service.

Art is a Flower: A More Accessible Homage

Complementing the Tree of Life is Art is a Flower, a whisky inspired by a 1902 speech by Mackintosh emphasizing that art must reflect nature — an idea summarized by the speech’s opening words.

Unlike the Tree of Life, Art is a Flower carries no age statement. It is crafted from carefully selected European oak casks seasoned with sherry from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain — a nod to Mackintosh’s time in Europe. This whisky is bottled at a robust 50.4% ABV.

The tasting notes evoke layers of dried fruits, sweet sticky dates and figs, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and floral fruits — a sensory expression of Mackintosh’s natural inspirations. The whisky comes in a beautifully designed presentation box featuring a stained glass rose motif.

Though the exact number of bottles produced remains undisclosed, Art is a Flower offers a more affordable way to celebrate Mackintosh’s legacy and The Macallan’s craftsmanship, with a suggested retail price of around $1,000.

Design by Stuart Robertson and a Lasting Tribute

Both whiskies and their packaging were conceived and designed by Stuart Robertson, Director of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. His involvement ensured the collection remains a faithful tribute to Mackintosh’s timeless vision.

Campbell noted, “We worked with Stuart to bring the spirit of Mackintosh to life, ensuring every element of the whisky and packaging design was a true tribute to and reflection of his enduring vision.”

Final Thoughts

With the Tree of Life Collection, The Macallan beautifully intertwines Scotland’s rich whisky heritage with one of its greatest artistic legacies. The result is a pair of whiskies that are not only rare and luxurious but also deeply meaningful — capturing the spirit of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in liquid form.

For collectors and admirers of fine whisky and design, this limited-edition release is a captivating celebration of art, history, and craftsmanship.
