Raka Wines has once again solidified its position among South Africa’s top wine producers following a recent series of distinguished accolades for its Biography Shiraz. Building on last week’s announcement of three Raka wines—Raka Pinotage, Raka Quinary, and Raka Biography Shiraz—earning spots in the Top 100 South African Wines, the Biography Shiraz has now received three additional honors: Red Wine of the Year, Grand Cru/Best in Class, and the Wine Consistency Award.
This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of the Raka team, whose Shiraz journey began in 1999 with their first vineyards and maiden vintage released in 2002.
Since then, Raka has expanded its Shiraz plantings to 11 hectares, including a new vineyard planted in 2022. Each vineyard block contributes distinct characteristics that enrich the complexity of the Biography Shiraz, making each vintage a unique chapter in the ongoing Raka legacy.
The Biography Shiraz also carries a personal family narrative. Its creation was inspired by Piet Dreyer, the family patriarch, who transitioned from a 36-year career in commercial squid fishing to winemaking. This shift not only marks a new passion but also embodies the family’s tradition and dedication.
Raka Wines expresses deep gratitude for the recognition and looks forward to continuing its pursuit of excellence in winemaking.
