OSLO, NORWAY – Despite a decline in wine imports by volume, Norway’s wine market experienced a significant surge in value in 2023, driven by a growing preference for premium wines.
According to recent data from Norwegian customs, the total volume of wine imported decreased by 2% to 91.7 million liters, marking the third consecutive year of decline. However, the value of these imports reached a record high of 5.544 billion Norwegian Krone (NOK), equivalent to approximately $529 million, representing a 13.6% increase compared to 2022.
The rise in value is attributed to a substantial increase in the average price per liter, jumping 16% to 60.48 NOK. This trend indicates a shift in consumer behavior, with Norwegians prioritizing quality over quantity and seeking out premium wines.
While traditional powerhouses Italy and France continue to dominate the market, their volume imports declined, although their wines remain highly valued. Spain, however, bucked the trend, securing its position as the third-largest supplier with increasing volume and value.
Germany also experienced growth in both volume and value, suggesting a growing appreciation for its wines.
Portugal stands out with the highest growth in the value of its wine exports to Norway, indicating a strong resonance with Norwegian consumers who are increasingly exploring the diversity of Portuguese wines.
This trend toward premiumization suggests that Norwegian wine drinkers are becoming more discerning and seeking higher quality offerings, fueled by a growing interest in wine culture, improved access to information, and an appreciation for craftsmanship.
