RichKat Craft Brewing Expands in Hong Kong Amidst Growing Beer Market

by Kaia

RichKat Craft Brewing, a Shenzhen-based beer brand, has opened two new pubs in Hong Kong, positioning itself to capitalize on a forecasted surge in the city’s craft beer segment. Industry experts predict this category is set to become one of the fastest-growing alcoholic drink segments in the region.

The new outlets are strategically located on Pottinger Street in Central and Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan—both popular areas that attract locals and expatriates alike after work hours. The pubs, which commenced operations in July and early October, currently serve only canned beer.

A spokesperson for RichKat emphasized the advantages of Hong Kong’s diverse market, stating, “The varied customer base will provide us with valuable feedback, helping us refine our product offerings and brand strategies from a more international perspective.” The spokesperson also noted that Hong Kong consumers possess a deeper appreciation for craft beer quality.

This expansion comes as Hong Kong’s retail landscape faces significant changes. Many established brands are adjusting their strategies in response to local residents increasingly shopping across the border in mainland China, where prices are often lower. Notably, the American restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse recently closed nine of its 19 branches in the city, citing challenging market conditions.

Conversely, mainland brands are aggressively expanding their presence in Hong Kong, with new leases by Chinese firms surging 215% year-on-year in the first seven months of this year, according to real estate firm JLL.

RichKat’s expansion could prove successful if forecasts from Euromonitor International hold true. The city’s beer consumption is projected to rise by 15.7% between 2023 and 2026, reaching 183 million liters—trailing only the wine segment, expected to grow by 18.5%. Other categories, including sparkling wine and whiskey, are anticipated to grow by 12.9% and 12%, respectively.

In comparison, beer consumption on the mainland is forecasted to increase by just 1.1%, reaching 43.3 billion liters in the same timeframe.

Clifton Chiu, a senior analyst at Euromonitor, noted the rising popularity of craft beer in Hong Kong, as consumers seek more diverse and sophisticated flavors. He also highlighted that global events in Hong Kong aimed at attracting tourists are likely to further bolster beer sales, revitalizing the local bar scene.
